This article will introduce you what are the exhaust clamps and their types.
What is exhaust clamp
The role of exhaust clamp
Different kinds of exhaust clamp
As the name suggests, this fixture is designed for automotive applications. It is used to safely and securely connect two metal pipes that withstand continuous high temperature and vibration, thereby avoiding the leakage of exhaust gas.The edges of the fixture are rounded to avoid damage to the exhaust system. The exhaust clamp is easy to assemble and provides even clamping force around the tube.
Exhaust clamps (also known as U-bolt clamps) are mainly used for automotive purposes to fix the exhaust to the vehicle without welding. Good quality fixtures will improve the performance of the vehicle, because the failure of the fixture means that the airflow will not be restricted by the exhaust. This will result in a loss of engine power and result in the performance of the car or truck not reaching the standard. Exhaust clamps are not only used to improve the performance of vehicles, but also have other non-automotive uses, such as fixing pipes or tubes inside or outside a building.
U-bolt
This is the most common vent clip. Most aftermarket exhaust systems and factories are using these types of fixtures. They are definitely useful for hanger and slide-in pipe connections. After the correct installation, the U-shaped exhaust clamp can complete the work. When you need to adjust or remove a part of the exhaust for repair, such as the transmission system or rear suspension repair, problems will occur. The small diameter of the clamp clamps the tubes together, so you can twist them, but usually you ca n’t actually separate the tubes. If your clamps are not tight enough to compress the tubes, they will leak.
Ball socket
This is not a fixture nor a flange. As it sounds, there is a round ball head that fits inside the flared sleeve end of the pipe. The two halves are compressed with two or three bolt rings on either side of the joint. This is a gasketless connection and is very common in factory exhaust systems, especially between the exhaust manifold and the catalytic converter. Cats are a repair part, so they must be easy to disassemble. The ball socket can be used repeatedly, so the effect is very good. These can also be purchased as welded parts for customized parts.
Belt clip
The belt clip is a wide metal band, usually stainless steel or mild steel, surrounding the exhaust pipe joint. They come in two sub-types, one is a pre-formed ring or a flat strap, which you can wrap around the pipe and bolt them together. Now, this pre-formed type is more commonly used in high-end after-sale exhaust systems that use a sliding fit, while flat-belt clamps sell a "sealing clamp" specifically for butt joints. The biggest advantage of this style is that it is easy to use, they are relatively inexpensive, and can be reused without damaging the pipeline. You can easily remove the system for repair, and then reinstall all components without cutting anything.
V band
These things are really expensive and can easily be sold for $ 20 to $ 30 (or more), but if you have a high-end car equipped with a turbocharger, then they are worth it. Generally, these fixtures are used in turbo exhaust systems because they are easy to use, have better sealing than anything else, and look good. Each fixture includes two mechanically interlocking rings, which are welded to the pipe, and a large outer ring that sandwiches the two rings to achieve a perfect leak-free seal. If you are building a custom exhaust system and may need to remove it later, or want a high-end appearance, it may be worth it to throw a few hundred dollars on some stainless steel V-clamps. For the Accord or Saturn that drives everyday, is this too much lethality? Yes. Does it look cool anyway? absolute.
